Memories vs Dreams. (click on image to discuss)
When memories take you back to childhood or high school friends sleepovers, most do not see them in chronological order. Memories appear in our minds from emotions and the environment around us. At work, we hear someone talk about dogs, your mind takes you back to playing with a childhood dog after school. Remembering the feeling of happiness and joy is what takes you back. In our memories, we have no date, time, or even exact location. Its only until someone asks, “where were you with your dog” we are almost forced to remember the dates, time, and location. Our thoughts and emotions take over when we look back. The same is true with dreams. As someone who vividly remembers my dreams in color, I could not tell you where I was or when immediately. My memories are the same.
In my book, I wanted everyone reading to view Tara/Tanis’s memories through her eyes, her memories. Since she was raised human, she would think of her life in fragments, not in chronological order. She would look back with love, sadness, anger, and hope. Writing this book in chronological order would be an injustice to the human mind. We are all emotional creatures, even if we all show them differently, which affects how we remember elements and how we dream. I had to also confuse the audience because sometimes our memories feel like dreams and vice versa. This is evident in my book and with Tara/Tanis. I really hope that when we all look back at our lives, we continue to remember them with emotion and continue to dream. My book is science fiction but my story also connects with humanity at its core. I would love for you to see this theme in my story.
